After years of actively seeking a writers group that encouraged female voices, with a format that allowed writers to workshop multiple pages on a regular basis AND brainstorm business strategies, Lily Mercer had just about given up.  She tried doing readings in her home with invited guests, but wanted something more structured.  So...

In March of 2018 the BECHDEL BABES had a showcase which brought in over 35 industry professionals.  We began with cocktails, followed by staged readings from nine female writers, and ended the evening with a full buffet.

The goal is to do another showcase by the end of 2019.   Stay tuned.

Lily Mercer began life as a dichotomy. Her father, one of twelve children from a family in the hills of Kentucky, went on to become a prominent politician. As a result Lily grew up a cross between Honey Boo-Boo and Kate Middleton: one week she’d be visiting her cousins and using the outhouse; the next she’d be meeting the governor. She was very close to three of her “spinster” aunts, who lived life on their own terns, so no surprise, Lily writes about women from all walks of life who aren’t afraid to break the rules.

Lily was determined to break a few rules of her own when she opted to skip law school and move to New York, where she attended the prestigious Playwrights Horizons Theatre School. There she studied acting, directing, and playwriting. After completing the program she worked extensively as an actor and theatre director then adding teaching to her resume. While working as an adjunct professor in Arizona, she founded a small theatre in Sedona, the Actors Repertory Theatre of Sedona (the A.R.T.S.). At the A.R.T.S. Lily developed ground-breaking programs including the New Growth Play Series for emerging playwrights, and the A.R.T.S. Academy, for professional training. Ultimately Lily embraced her love of writing, and applied to the NYU/Tisch Department of Dramatic Writing. In 2012 she received an MFA with a concentration in film, and won the Charles Pupura Award for overall excellence in writing.

Since moving to Los Angeles in 2013, Lily has won the ISA (International Screenwriting Association) Fast Track Fellowship, the Vancouver Women in Film Festival Best Screenplay, and advanced in twelve other competitions including the Nicholl Fellowship, the Austin Film Festival, CineStory TV Fellowship, the Creative World Awards, and the PAGE Awards. Recently Lily had both a screenplay and an original pilot selected as finalists for the Richmond International Film Festival.

Current projects include a new pilot about Pocahontas entitled POCAHONTAS: The Other Story, as well as THE BIG BLIND, another new pilot about a hotshot female poker player thrust into the world of emerald smuggling.   Meanwhile, Lily continues to develop a TV series entitled LOST WOMEN OF AMERICAN HISTORY.  However, out of her many accomplishments, Lily claims giving voice to the Bechdel Babes Writing Partners, is one of her proudest achievements.
